Carlisle v SUFC

United's eight-match winning run came an abrupt end in the first game of 2012.

Ched Evans took his tally to 16 for the season with a first half double and the Blades hit the woodwork on three occasions but left a cold Cumbria with nothing.

Francois Zoko scored twice for the home side, whilst former Blade Jon-Paul McGovern netted the second half winner.

Evans almost added a second five minutes later but he struck the woodwork from McDonald's cross after a quick free-kick and the action continued as Carlisle regained the lead on 15 minutes. The Blades half-cleared a corner but Thirlwell delivered back into the box and Carlisle survived two offside calls as Miller laid off for ZOKO to claim his second goal with a diving header.

Former Blade Thirlwell was lucky to escape with just a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Evans and the exhilarating fixture continued as United hit a post for the second time on 21 minutes. From a throw, Porter flicked on and Evans laid off for Quinn to fire against Collin's right post, whilst Flynn was crowded out as he attempted to put away the rebound.

Simonsen was forced to push out a McGovern shot as Carlisle looked a threat from another corner on the half hour, whilst United hit back with efforts from McDonald, Doyle and Maguire as the home side began to look nervy at the back. To his credit, though, Murphy did well to deflect away an Evans shot and then the defender got a necessary touch to turn away a McDonald cross.

The pressure was mounting on the Carlisle goal and after goalkeeper Collin had pushed away a Porter header from Flynn's corner, three minutes of added time at the end of the first half was the last signal the home fans wanted to see - and they were right to be worried.

Miller was adjudged to have fouled Evans on the edge of the box and the Blades were presented with another chance to level in injury-time. The initial shot from Evans was blocked by the wall, the rebound from McDonald was kicked away but the loose ball fell to EVANS, who blasted beyond Collin. It was the last serious play of an action-packed first half and, no doubt, would have changed the half-time team-talks of both Messrs Abbott and Wilson.

The start of the second half was not as frantic as the first but Carlisle again started the better and United had to withstand a spell of pressure, which included Montgomery blocking a powerful Robson effort with his head. It was from a home side attack that the Blades almost took the lead around the hour mark, McDonald broke away down the right and from his pass, Evans held off his marker but saw his shot come back off a post once again.

Wilson threw on fresh legs as Cresswell replaced Porter and the substitute quickly attempted to chip Collin but the goalkeeper was well placed to pluck the ball out of the air. At the other end, Berrett had an effort saved by Simonsen and Robson fired a free-kick over the crossbar.

The Blades were forced to defend with a blanket of rain in their faces for a period and it was during this spell, and whilst McDonald changed his boots, that Carlisle went ahead for a third time. Following a ball from the left, McGOVERN played a one-two win Miller on the edge of the box before sidefooting into the corner of the net, beyond Simonsen's reach.

United hit back with headers from Flynn and Cresswell and Wilson introduced Williamson with 15 minutes to go. Collins was shown a yellow card for a foul on Miller but, expectedly, the Blades did most of the attacking late on. Clear-cut chances were sparse, though, even when Beattie was introduced for the closing stages.

Zoko wasted a great chance to complete his hat-trick in the 90th minute, turning over a McGovern pull-back but it proved incidental as the Blades were unable to claim a third leveller in the four injury-time minutes.
